Located in the historic railroad town of Minturn, Colorado, Holy Toledo Consignment Store occupies what was originally built as a church in 1906. To satisfy the growing needs of the business, 900 sf was added onto the existing 2400 sf building. The architecture of the addition draws upon the semi-circular form common of church apses, as well as, the segmented arch motif established in the existing building. Additionally, the design addresses three main problems with the current building: (1) the addition helps relate to the scale of the single-family neighborhood by staying one-story tall and stepping back at the front façade (2) the addition acts as a “snow collector”, eliminating the concern of snow shedding on customers and (3) the addition orients its entry towards the street to capitalize on foot traffic.
