This dense residential community, situated on the edge of a geographically land-locked mesa in northern New Mexico, provided a unique opportunity to respond to a number of cultural, demographic, and topographic issues. The repetitive building forms and their multi-colored exteriors resulted from observing the surrounding Pueblo Indian communities. When translated to a community for our times, this prototype served to provide varying housing types for different users; from the single school teacher living in one of the multi-family units, to the newly married couple living in a townhouse, to the family with small children living in one of the duplex units. The downhill units step in such a manner as not to block views from the uphill units, while the interior access road serves double duty as a meeting place for the varying occupants to interact.
