Set on the site of an existing A-Frame, this 3900 sf duplex residence design proposal was for the Town of Vail and was intended to be sold as employee housing. With access on this narrow lot driving the design, a unique tandem parking configuration substantially reduced the amount of pavement for the driveway, thus minimizing the impact on the adjacent stream and landscaping. In a further effort to reduce disturbance to the property, the design occupies the previous building’s footprint. Orienting the length of the building from East to West allows each residence to capitalize on views, as well as, allowing for optimum solar access from the roof for photovoltaic panels. Through this process, our goal was to demonstrate that affordable housing does not need to be void of architectural interest.
