The architecture of the Mullins Residence illustrates a unique take on the classic mountain lodge. By combining the traditional log element with industrial steel and weathered sheet metal elements, the home feels familiar yet unexpected. Unexpected design details occur at every turn, from the log and steel truss detailing to the metaphorical tree columns lining the entry porch. The simple, linear floor plan takes advantage of the narrow lot by providing access to the views of the Continental Divide from almost every room. By burying the west portion of the structure into the uphill slope and by providing automated high clerestory windows, the home takes advantage of the site by incorporating passive heating and cooling in all but the most extreme temperatures.
